General rating[]
Just to avoid insulting anyone by my low rating: this article is a stub, and a very nice stub. But it needs very much, only the most important compilers and interpreters of the most important PL classes should be here, the other ones on separate lists, such as compilers for C related PL:s, compilers for Java related PL:s, compilers for Pascal related PL:s, interpreters and compilers for LISPs and Schemes, a.s.o.. I'll make some contribs now and then... L8R. rursus 14:27, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Java compilers - illegal?[]
The article currently states (List of compilers and interpreters#Language: Java):
- "Sun's Java Compiler is the only compiler authorized by Sun Microsystems."
Does this mean all other compilers for Java are illegal and will be sued by Sun Microsystems? (I guess not... I need confirmation) --koisuru (talk) 04:42, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- It seems to me that if you want to use the word "Java" for your virtual machine, then Sun may have some compatibility requirements. But this refers to "Java the virtual machine" not "Java the programming language" The statement you quoted indicates to me that it can only guarantee that its virtual machine will run code correctly generated by its own compiler. - I've never seen any copyright for the programming language itself. Maybe there is one by default, but there are other free implementations of Java as a programming language. And they have been around for a long time. Bitfreedom 18:27, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
